Let's all bow our heads

Most people never think about what it takes to get a crop from farm to table. That's something we hope to change here at Hawes Farms. Take, for instance, our pumpkin crop. We had a freak hail storm at the beginning at August and it took its toll on our poor wittle pumpkin plants. As you can see by the picture, it beat them up to the point that we wondered if they would survive. Happily, our plants recovered just fine, but the damage they suffered will delay our pumpkin harvest just a bit. We plan to harvest mid-October this year instead of late September.

So the next time you sit down to eat, think about what it took to grow that ear of corn or head of broccoli. Chances are there's a farmer on the other end that stressed over its cultivation until the very end.
